Agricultural fencing for horses: How can it be preserved?

Often made of wood, agricultural fencing is popular with owners of horse rides, stud farms and people who keep just a few animals. It can be used to delimit horse pastures, or to fence paddocks or tracks.

Impregnation - the key to preserving agricultural fencing

Impregnation consists in treating the wood with a vacuum and pressure process in order to protect it from bad weather and mould. To guarantee the effectiveness of the treatment, the wood must be very dry. Drying makes it possible to empty the wood cells of their water. The impregnation product will therefore be able to penetrate and preserve the fence in the long term.

Salt impregnation gives the wood an olive-green colour. The DeepProtect treatment is suitable for all situations where the fence is likely to come into contact with skin, particularly on tracks and paddocks. Using this process, the pens have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years.

Coloured salt impregnation has the same advantages as conventional salt impregnation, but colours the wood brown or black.

Choose the type of fence - Practical and aesthetic aspects

The choice of fencing will of course be influenced by its use. Thus, the height and number of rails should be adjusted according to the size of the animals and their character. For horses, a height equivalent to two thirds of the height at the withers of the tallest horse is generally recommended. Depending on the temperament of the animals and the species, an electric wire can be added to the wooden pen. In the case of smaller animals, it is possible to equip the bottom of the fence with a wire mesh.
